PHTHALATES - Kimia dalam barang mainan anak!!

Okay, I am bringing up this topic to share with you all the mothers out there who are really concern about their child health and wellness.. As some of you may know that I am working in a medical device manufacturer buat barang hospital macam catheters, endotracheal tubes dan banyak lagilaaa barang2 yg biasa kita nampak dalam cita ER dan Grey's Anatomy... Sekarang nih, sudah keluar regulation yg semua barang yg mengandungi PHTHALATES mestilah dilabel... dan since barang yg kami wat most of them are made of PVC (POLY VINYL CHLORIDE), so most of them memang ada PHTHALATES.. here I am not discussing barang spital but things that our child love most..barang permainan..which many of them are made of PVC which may contains PHTHALATES. This chemical is causing a major chaos to our market.

What are phthalates?
Phthalates are a family of man-made chemical compounds developed in the last century to be used in the manufacture of plastics, solvents, and personal care products. They are colorless, odorless, oily liquids that do not evaporate easily and do not chemically bind to the material they are added to.

How am I exposed to phthalates?
Ingestion, inhalation, skin absorption, and intravenous injection are all potential pathways of exposure. The ever-present use of phthalates as an additive to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) products to make them flexible and to personal care products to make fragrances last longer in the past 50 years has resulted in widespread general population exposure.
Phthalates are readily absorbed into the human body and are converted quickly to their respective metabolites. Unlike some chemicals, they tend to pass out of the body quickly in urine and feces. Phthalates can interact with each other and increase the exposure effect.

How do phthalates enter the environment?
Phthalates can be released from a product by heat, agitation, and prolonged storage. The release can occur during all the stages of the product lifecycle - from production, through use, to disposal.

Which population of humans is at a greater health risk to phthalate exposure?
Children under the age of three are more at risk from phthalates because of their developing, smaller body size and ever-present exposure to children’s products manufactured using multiple types of phthalate compounds. Young children use their mouths to explore, and consequently, can be exposed to higher levels by sucking on products made of phthalate-containing plastics.

What can I do to avoid exposure?
Read labels. Avoid using products that contain phthalates. Support companies committed to producing phthalate-free

What are some examples of common everyday exposures to phthalates and tips to avoid exposure?
Microwaving food using plastic products.
Tip: Use only “microwave safe” containers and phthalate-free containers and plastic wrap when microwaving food and/or drinks. Phthalates can leach from food storage containers and food wrap into foods (particularly those foods that are oily or that have a high fat content) on contact and when heated.

Sucking or chewing soft plastic/vinyl products.
Tip: Use only plastic/vinyl toys and toothbrushes labeled “phthalate- free.” If unsure, call the manufacturer. In 1998 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requested phthalates be removed from soft rattles, pacifiers, bottle nipples, and teethers.

Personal care products and vinyl clothing.
Tip: Read labels. If unsure, call the manufacturer.

Medical situations.
Tip: PVC is used in a wide range of medical devices, such as intravenous (IV) tubing, blood bags, and catheters. Ask your healthcare provider to use phthalate-free tubing and medical bags especially for procedures such as blood transfusions and dialysis.

What negative health effects have phthalates been shown to have in laboratory animals?
Very few studies have examined the health effects of phthalates on humans. In lab animals, phthalate exposure has been found to be associated with numerous reproductive health and developmental problems such as:
• Early onset of puberty.
• Interfering with the male reproductive tract development.
• Interfering with the natural functioning of the hormone system.
• Causing reproductive and genital defects.
• Lower testosterone levels in adolescent males.
• Lower sperm count in adult males.

Phthalates are weak endocrine disruptors and androgen blocking chemicals. This means that when absorbed into the body phthalates can either mimic or block female hormones, or in males, suppress the hormones involved in male sexual development.
Phthalates cross the placenta.

How do I identify phthalates in products?
There is no easy way to tell if a product has added phthalates. Phthalates can be identified on labels by a three or four letter acronym that defines their chemical structures. Labels rarely state “contains phthalates”.

There are a multitude of phthalate compounds. Which phthalate compound is added to a product depends in part on their molecular weight (MW). Phthalates with a higher molecular weight (HMW) are very slightly soluble in water; phthalates with a lower molecular weight (LMW) are reasonably soluble in water.

The 8 most widely used phthalate compounds and their metabolites are:
• BBP: butyl benzyl phthalate (LMW) *, **, ***
MBzP: mono benzyl phthalate
• DBP: di-n-butyl phthalate (LMW) *, **, ***
MBP: mono-n-butyl phthalate
MiBP: mono-isobutyl phthalate

Most common phthalate added to nail polish.
• DEHP: di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (HMW) *, **, ***
MEHP: mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate

Most widely-added phthalate to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to make products flexible.
• DEP: diethyl phthalate (LMW)
MEP: monoethyl phthalate

Most common phthalate added to personal care products to enhance fragrance.
• DiDP: di-isodecyl phthalate (HMW) *, **, ***
• DiNP: di-isononyll phthalate (HMW) *, **, ***

Most common phthalate added as a softener in the manufacture of toys and childcare products, such as bath toys, drinking straws, and rubber ducks.

• DnHP: di-n- hexyl phthalate *
• DnOP: di-n-octyl phthalate (LMW) **, ***
* Listed in California’s Proposition 65 as a reproductive and developmental toxicant.
** Listed in California’s AB1108 (Ma and Huffman). The bill, if passed, will ban use in the manufacture of any toy or childcare article intended for use by a child under three years of age.
*** European Union banned as a phthalate softener in the manufacture of toys and childcare articles.

Read Labels to avoid phthalates.
The most common products using phthalate compounds are:

PVC Products
Phthalates are frequently added to PVC (vinyl) products to soften and make more flexible. If a plastic product is flexible, it probably contains phthalates unless the label specifically says it does not.

Personal Care Products
Phthalates are often added to personal care products, such as nail polish, perfumes, deodorants, hair gels, shampoos, soaps, hair sprays, and body lotions, to help lubricate other substances in the formula and to carry fragrances. Phthalates must be listed among the ingredients on product labels, unless they are added as a part of the “fragrance.” Under current law, they can then simply be labeled “fragrance,” even though they may make up 20% or more of the product.
Many companies have voluntarily removed phthalates from their products. A company will usually label its product “phthalate-free.” If unsure, call the company. If you can’t get information from the manufacturer, look for alternatives.

How can I recognize plastic toys and containers containing phthalates?
All plastics are not the same. One easy way to recognize plastic toys, clothing, bottles, food and beverage storage containers, and/or food wrap that may contain phthalate compounds is to look for the number 3 inside the universal recycling symbol usually molded into the plastic on the bottom of the product.
Avoid products with the number 3 within the arrows and the letters “V” or “PVC” below the arrowsWe are too concern about BPA content in polycarbonate...now I am introducing you another hazardous chemical that exists very near to your precious ones.
I welcome your thoughts on this matter..Please google more on this chemical for better understanding..

rozy

PrOdUcT ReViEw- jUmPsAcBaBy RiNg sLiNg

This is my first not DIY ring sling (first means more to come?).. I really love this sling as it is padded at the shoulder and the large ring makes the threading much easier.. No more slipping macam guna my DIY No sew ring sling.. The hidden pocket is brilliant as I can store my compact powder and lipstick... but not using it for my purse as heavy item if allow it to dangle may cause it feel heavier (faham kah?). Hadiff is used to ring sling and pouch so he doesn't have any problem sitting in it..

I would definitely recommend this ring sling to first timer.

PrOdUcT ReViEw- SsC BoBa OrGaNiC

Received CHESTNUT BOBA ORGANIC last weekend..never had a chance to test it as we were soo busy attending kenduris.. Last nite we took pics at Stesen Keretapi Parit Buntaq tengah2 malam buta.

I can't compare to any SSC as never try any...being a first timer to SSC, I would say:-
1- easy to wear front carry, never had chance to try back carry
2- Feel so tak fehpening feminin compares to wearing ring sling
3- Comfy and so soft
4 - Hadiff cam restless sikit lam ni, may be tak pernah try kot.. he soo used to sling and pouch...
5- I did not feel the weight as it is greatly distributed.

In short, I would say this is a worth buying!! But I guess, only Mr Asben will be the wearer..not mee... xlaratlaa nak bawak hadiff..

HaDiFf DaPaT BaJu DaRi aUnTiE AJa

Mybreastpump shop ada wat appreciation lucky draw for their customers and visitors...mudah ja nak join... though the winners were selected randomly, it does reflect that the owner really appreciate those who buy, promotes and befriended her. I did not expect to win anything, saja ja syok2 ..cam xsangka Hadiff dapat baju..tenkiu ya auntie.. link sebelah tu bukannya tuk bodek yaa..senang nak cari link nenti kalau nak beli apa2.... (and memang dok promote kedai aja pun)..

Let me share with you why i really like this shop (or the owner). I only bought FS from Aja tu pun after Aja offered me to join her 6mths kutu (dah abis pun).. her feedback and responses were really superb whenever I had problem with the pump (the pump is ok just me yg xbopa paham). Though I was the one who called her... she preferred to call me instead (bagus tul Service After Sales nyaa). So kawan-kawan..jangan mudah terpedaya dengan harga pump yg lebih murah (or ada yg lebih mahal?), the most important thing in buying things (especially di alam siber nih) isthe utmost recommendations from friends on the SAS.. In a nutshell, beli laa dari Aja..hehehhe

My NeW PaSsIon- BaByWeAriNG

Those who are my blog's regular visitors may notice that I just included another link to Malaysian Babywearer...ha haa new passion just kicks in! After a successful commitment on breastfeeding and cloth diapering...me had found new passion... but then this is not so new for me as I already have a pouch and a ring sling used since so many months ago. But when I said new passion I am talking about new baby carriers such as ring sling, Soft Structure Carrier (SSC),Mei Tai or may be wrap (bila dapat the second laa kann). Alamak!! mesti Mr Asben jeling2 dah.. but he said...xpa kalau berkemampuan...hehhehe

To start with, this month alone I had placed two orders, one from sleepywrap.com for their Boba Organic --> definitely for our weekend hiking trip... and a ring sling from Jumpsacbaby.com.. for their beautiful Jungle Birds on Kiwi x sabar lak nak tunggu purchased items sampai.

Will update the action pic soon!!!

Owh but don't worry I am still devoted to my Combi..hehhe

NeW GaLaCtOgOgUe- TeStEd!

This is a topic basi for a 1 year 1 month fully breastfed mother (saya ler tu)..but I would like to introduce to you my attempts on new galactogogue.

A galactagogue is anything that excites lactation. In other words any thing that increases milk production (source: http://www.galactagogue.com/). Most of the breastfeeding moms will definitely take one or more galactagogue to increase or maintain the breastmilk supply. Me take Melilea Soymilk everyday without fail, occasionally air longan rebus sendiri (whenever I feel that my yield has dropped tahap gaban giler) or sometimes bila terjumpa jantung pisang kat kedai nasik campur.. so far only soymilk and air longan have worked wonders to me..plus with frequent pumping and nursing..

After reading an entry by Mama- miya on EDAMAME, (which actually caused a minor chaos to the susuibu.com members, sebok mencari benda alah nih), saya pun sebok mencari gak.. Mr Asben found this green beans at Jusco Bandar Perda..and I also bought Teh Longan and red dates yg dah lama cari..

The green beans or Japanese soy beans does taste good..sedap crunchy lemak2 gitu.. few mothers said they can feel the effect (B bengkak) on the same day..but sad to say..not for me... I did not feel a thing...
The longan and red dates tea tastes so sweet.. but sedap... it did boost my milk sikit..i mean a usual 12oz per day (3X pumping at office) had increased to 14oz per day... tp tu lahh..kadang2 minum..kadang2 terlupa..

Most of all, banyak mana galactogogue you take pun if malas pumping...you can start saying goodbye to high yield.

Pst:-really miss my early days, sekali pump dapat 8oz...huhuhu

ChEF In MaKiNg - ChEf HaDiFfBoLaT

Rasanya HadiffBolat bila besaq nanti nak jadi cheff kot.. he seems sooooo happy to be in the kitchen especially when he can get hold of a kuali and a senduk.. sampy ke ruang tamu dia bawak benda2 tu.. he puts everything inside his "periuk".. remote control tv, my mobile phone, his cookies..
But for me, that is not a surprise as he may inherit the "cooking hands" from Mr Asben..

HaDifF NeW InTeReSt - MaGnET

Hadiff new interest that makes me happy... men magnet ties lekat2 kat washing machine.. while me (or always Mr Asben?) cook, he would affix and pull back the magnetic bars from the WM. Learning process in progress... he would also use a steel spoon to play with it. Though I am afraid that he might break it (whoo..sayang woooo..my collection tu), I guess it does help me providing some peace. Hehehheheh..

HaDiFf WiTh HiS nEw gErEk!

Dah lama xpost cita terkini HadiffBolat..

Hadiff dapat gerek (read:basikal or beskat) baru, a cheap beskat for him to main2 kat umah Nanie the Nanny..The reason I bought another beskat is Nanie told me that Hadiff selalu dok ushar2 beskat jiran... pegang2 kat celah pagar.. sian lak dengar..huhuhuuh. So I decided to buy a similar beskat, sharing basis with Mr Asben..found the cheapest yet safe beskat at kedai Mak Nya in kepala batas..only RM38 though I bargained for RM35 <---kedekut tul itu mak nyaa..

Hadiff seemed to like it almost instantly especially dengan pot pot (read:honk). See below bawak balik pun susah sebab dia nak pegang gak beskat tu lam keta...so we ended up fully reclined the co driver punya seat to allow him touching his new beskat. Ohw..this time he still tried to sit inside the rear basket...tp kali nih sah2 xmuat..jatuh tergolek gaklaa...

Gambar dibawah, gambar orang merajuk sebab kenot play with tissue paper kat a Siamese restaurant...huhh macam-macam..
